Richard Habersham - President Of Mount Pleasant’s Phillips Community


Congratulations Richard Habersham, the president of Mount Pleasant’s Phillips Community. He was recognized in September 2023 by the National Register of Historic Places as a “traditional cultural place”—a national first for a Black Settlement Community As he has been a vocal advocate for his community and has led the fight to protect his neighborhood and its surrounding wetlands from development.


In October 2023, he presented the Southern Environmental Law Center with a Distinguished Service Award from the Phillips Community Association for their work representing Phillips community residents in challenging Charleston County’s plans to expand Highway 41 through the historic Phillips Settlement Community.


December 12th, 2023, at the Town of Mount Pleasant Council Meeting Mr. Habersham was presented the Cresco Historical Stewardship Award Winner for 2023.
